Chaos at Howe Community Park Injures Multiple Gunshot Victims in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Sacramento authorities are working a violent incident that occurred Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area just as officers were shutting down a large unauthorized gathering of hundreds of attendees.

Background

Deputies initially got calls about the park around 6:30 PM on April 18 after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, a second caller reported concerning an alleged brawl unfolding inside the park.

Aerial units searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Even so, authorities discovered that hundreds of people had gathered without authorization in an unauthorized manner.

When the Shots Rang Out

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by encircling the gathering and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing those gathered to go home. About 15 minutes were spent for the crowd to leave.

As of last report, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

The Investigation

The main crime scene was believed to have happened along the Cottage Way corridor near the Home Depot store at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators identified more spent casings along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were discovered in the metal fencing bordering the Home Depot store. These discoveries confirmed that a shooter had been aiming south from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot building and parking lot. The nearby Home Depot was temporarily locked down while the scene was active. Crime scene personnel kept processing evidence through the early morning hours.

Detainees in Solano County

Details gathered over police scanner frequencies showed that a Kia connected to the shooting had been detained in the Solano County area. Four people were stopped and detained. Deputies were traveling to Solano County to return them to Sacramento for formal questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators made clear that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
